CALCULATE DEGREE PADS FOR ANGLE CHANGES

You can plug your numbers into the RED   options in the DEGREE PAD CALCULATOR below or use the Chart to get a close approximation of the angle that you want the hoof to change when adding degree pads or making wedged shoes. Find the length of the shoe, then in the middle of the chart find the angle that you want to increase the hoof angle by reading the thickness of the pad at the heel needed. For example: the veterinarian wants you to raise the hoof angle by 3 degrees (You have to know if this request is before trimming the hoof because if the hoof has to be trimmed you will have to adjust the degree pad change to accomondate the difference caused by the trim), find the hoof length by measuring from the center of the toe to the center of the heels where the shoe will end. Say for example, it is 6 1/2 inches, move across the line to 3 degrees. The pad thickness will be between 5/16 and 3/8 of an inch. (EXAMPLE NUMBERS IN GREEN) This chart can also give a close approximation of the angle change due to how much toe or heel is trimmed. For example, if the hoof angle needed to be raised by 3 degrees and the overall hoof length is 6 1/2 inches, between 5/16 and 3/8 of an inch of toe would have to be removed.  CALCULATE STOCK LENGTHS

Calculate you stock length by Measuring the widest part of your hoof then the longest diagonal and finally desired heel width. Plug these numbers into the the correlating  RED boxes on the page. You can read the length of the stock for an open shoe or the necessary length for a bar shoe. If you are an individual who likes to hammer work the stock and finish as you go you may have to adjust the recommended length to accomondate your style. if you like to machine finish at the conclusion of making your shoe the recomended size should be appropriate. Creasing, scarfing, upsetting, heel finish, drawing and other forging will affect the length of the stock.
